Tk13.4 lakh cr funnelled via hundi by recruiting agencies in 10 years: White Paper
It highlighted that this amount is four times the cost of building Dhaka MRT Line 06 (Uttara to Motijheel)
Recruiting agencies have channelled Tk13.4 lakh crore through hundi transactions for visa purchases over the last decade, according to a White Paper on the State of the Bangladesh Economy.
The final draft of the document, which was submitted to the chief adviser (CA) of the interim government today (1 December), highlighted that this amount is four times the cost of building Dhaka MRT Line 06 (Uttara to Motijheel).
It said syndicates and exploitative recruitment practices have deprived migrant workers of equitable access to employment and diminished remittance contributions to the economy.
The White Paper Committee, headed by prominent economist Debapriya Bhattacharya, submitted the document to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at his Tejgaon office in Dhaka.
Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur, Principal Secretary to Chief Adviser Sirajuddin Sathi, and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed were also present at the handover ceremony.
A report titled 'Dissection of a Development Narrative' is expected to be made available to the public soon.
