Traders demand abolition of dual registration for reconditioned vehicles

Reconditioned Vehicles importers and dealers have called for the cancellation of the dual registration system for imported reconditioned vehicles.

In a meeting on 10 January, a delegation of the Reconditioned Vehicle Importers and Dealers Association (Barvida) led by its President Habib Ullah Don requested Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder to gradually phase out 15-20 years old unfit vehicles for a pollution-free capital.

Barvida leaders also urged the authorities to include them in the BRTA's vehicle registration process.

The BRTA chairman assured the reconditioned vehicle dealers to implement the proposals after necessary scrutiny, said a press release from the Barvida.

Imported old cars have to be registered once in the name of the importer and later in the name of the buyer after bringing them into the country. Barvida leaders termed the system as "dual registration" and demanded its cancellation.

Alleging that the registration fees for cars, jeeps, microbuses and ambulances have been increased unreasonably in the Road Transport Rules 2022, the Barvida leaders demanded rationalisation of these fees.

The Barvida delegation included its Secretary General Mohammad Shahidul Islam, First Vice President Md. Aslam Serniabat, Second Vice President Riaz Rahman, Treasurer Mohammad Anisur Rahman, Executive Members Mohammad Saiful Islam (Samrat), Abu Hossain Bhuiyan Ranu and Poonam Sharmin Jhilmil and general member Md Akhtar Hossain Majumder.
