Students to enjoy half-fare on buses every day
This decision will be applicable only in metropolitan areas
Buses from now on will charge students half-fare on all days of the week in Dhaka and other metropolitan areas, said Md Saiful Alam, general secretary of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association.
"The country has become independent for the second time due to the student's sacrifice. For a long time, they have been demanding a 50% discount on bus fares on all seven days of the week. From 24 September, the half-fare will be effective," he said today during a seminar at the Engineers' Institution auditorium in the capital.
He further added, "Students will be eligible for the half-fare from 6am to 12am. To avail of the discount, students must either be in uniform or carry their student ID."
This decision will be applicable only in metropolitan areas, he said.
Saiful Alam also shared that a meeting was held between bus owner leaders and representatives of the Nirapod Sarak Chai at the office of Transport Owners Association on 21 August. In the meeting, various issues related to half fare of students and some other issues on the transport sector were discussed extensively.
Representatives informed us that BRTA through a notification has implemented a half fare for students on buses for 5 days a week (excluding Friday-Saturday) from 1 December 2021, which is still valid. Therefore, they requested the owner leaders to implement half-fare for students in buses for 7 days instead of 5 days a week, he added.
After considering the appeal, it was decided to take the half-fare from the students in the city buses for 7 days instead of 5 days in a week, which will be effective from tomorrow, 24 September, continued Saiful Alam.
