Two new insecticides tested at DSCC
DSCC officials sprayed the insecticides with fogging machines around three nets, each containing 50 mosquitoes of mixed types at the Nagar Bhaban building
The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) tested two different types of insecticides on mosquitos on Tuesday.
The insecticides are Deltanethrin 1.25% ULV and Malathion 5% RSU. Another type of insecticide Limit Liquid PHP 20%, which is currently in use by the DSCC, was also tested.
DSCC officials sprayed the insecticides with fogging machines around three nets, each containing 50 mosquitoes of mixed types at the Nagar Bhaban building.
After twenty minutes, the tests results showed that the Deltamethrin 1.25% ULV left 84%, 92% and 82% mosquitoes stunned in the first, second and third nets respectively.
While the Malathion 5% RSU left 92%,100% and 100% and Limit Liquid PHP 20% left 90%,100% and 84% mosquitoes stunned in the first, second and third nets respectively.
The results will be verified after 24 hours for the final decision.
The test conducted by the DSCC also revealed that the existing type of insecticide used by the city corporation is also effective against the mosquito menace.
DSCC Chief Store and Purchase Officer Md Nuruzzaman said the Limit Liquid PHP 20% is more than 80% effective in Tuesday's test.
The Limit Liquid PHP 20% was earlier declared ineffective earlier by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B).
“It is the ICDDR,B, who can reply why and how they declared that the insecticide is not effective,” Nuruzzaman told reporters while answering a query.
The DSCC officials said the insecticides will be tested further twice, including once in the Plant Protection Wing and once in the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research Laboratory.
The samples of the two new pesticides were brought fromTagros Chemical Ltd in India. Following their test results, a decision will be taken on whether or not it will be imported.
