Two new, one existing insecticides pass test by DSCC

Two new insecticides along with an existing one passed a test conducted on Tuesday by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
DSCC Chief Store and Purchase Officer Md Nuruzzaman presented the detailed report of the test on Wednesday at a press conference held at Nagar Bhaban.
The city corporation imported the samples of the new insecticides from Indian firm Tagros Chemical Ltd, to eradicate Aedes mosquitoes responsible for spreading the dengue fever.

The insecticides are- Deltamethrin 1.25% ULV and Malathion 5% RSU. On the other hand, the insecticide that was already in the DSCC’s stock is Limit Liquid PHP 20%. All the insecticides have World Health Organization (WHO) approval.
During individual trials for each of the three insecticides, DSCC officials sprayed the insecticides with fogging machines at the three cages. Each cage contained 50 mosquitoes of mixed types including Aedes and Culex.
The cages were inspected after 24 hours to determine the mortality rates of the mosquitoes.
Tests revealed that Deltamethrin 1.25% ULV left 100%, 100% and 98% mosquitoes dead in the first, second and third cages respectively.The Malathion 5% RSU left 100% dead in all of the three cages and Limit Liquid PHP 20% left 90%,100% and 98% mosquitoes dead in the first, second and third cages respectively.
Md Nuruzzaman said that all the tests have provided satisfactory results as 80% lethality in a test is enough to prove the test-result as satisfactory. However, he added that two more different tests will be conducted for the three insecticides to make a reliable decision.
The next test will be conducted at Plant Protection Wing, Department of Agricultural Marketing, and Farmgate in the city. This test will be done to verify whether they have all the WHO-approved constituents, which they claim to have.
The third and final test will be conducted at Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, Directorate General of Health Services, Mohakhali in the city to verify the effectiveness of the insecticides.
“If results of all the tests are satisfactory then the insecticides which are appropriate for us and the environment will be imported by the city corporation,” Md Nuruzzaman told reporters.
