Uncertainty looms over 2nd phase Ijtema amid calls for action against Saad followers
Hefazat has announced nationwide protest programme on 10 January and Ulama conference on 25 January
The second phase of Bishwa Ijtema, one of the largest congregations of Muslims in the world, in Gazipur's Tongi is facing uncertainty following a deadly clash between the followers of Tablighi Jamaat factions in December.
According to the initial plan, the first phase is scheduled to be held from 31 January to 2 February and the second phase on 7-9 February.
However, a ban on gatherings was imposed after a violent clash on 17 December erupted over control of the Ijtema ground that left four people dead.
Although the ban was lifted over the past two days, concerns remain about the arrangement of the second phase by the followers of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi of India.
Speaking at a press conference at Markaz Mosque in Kakrail yesterday, Hefazat-e-Islam Ameer Allama Shah Mohibullah Babunagari expressed deep concern about the "controversial role" of Maulana Saad and the actions of his followers.
He blamed pro-Saad leaders for the 17 December clash and criticised their "ignorance and stubbornness."
Hefazat announced a nationwide protest programme for 10 January and an Ulama conference for 25 January. The conference will determine further action if the government fails to address their demands, it said.
Babunagari warned of potential collusion between "anti-Bangladesh and internal evil forces" with the Saad supporters, emphasising the need for urgent action to prevent further violence.
Mamunul Haque, general secretary of Hefazat's Dhaka metropolitan unit, demanded an immediate ban on all activities of the Saad faction.

He argued that Saad followers' involvement in the deadly attack disqualifies them from arranging the Ijtema.
Mamunul, also a key leader of Zubair's group, denied any political motivation behind Hefazat's stance, emphasising the pivotal role of Ulamas in the Ijtema and Tabligh activities.
Since the announcement of the Ijtema dates, clashes between the two factions have grown.
Tensions flared between two factions of the Tablighi Jamaat after five of Maulana Saad's followers were attacked on their vehicle on 12 December.
Since then, the groups have had confrontations sporadically.
