VAT detectives confiscate 14 sacks of cigarettes with fake banderoles
The shipments, which also lacked valid VAT invoices, had been heading to Chowmuhani of Noakhali
A team of VAT detectives has confiscated 14 sacks of cigarettes with fake banderoles from SA Paribahan Depot of the capital's Shantinagar area.
VAT detectives primarily used ultraviolet rays on the banderoles to check their authenticity and found that they were fake, sources at the VAT intelligence said on Sunday.
They will still send the confiscated cigarettes to the Security and Printing Press for further checks.
The 14 sacks of cigarettes came to Dhaka in two shipments. The first shipment from Kushtia had 3.5 lakh Caesar cigarettes in 12 sacks. The second one, from Bogura, had 40,000 Senor Gold cigarettes.
The shipments, which also lacked valid VAT invoices, had been heading to Chowmuhani of Noakhali.
The sources further said that SA Paribahan authorities will be summoned for transporting cigarettes without a proper VAT invoice.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has already made it mandatory for all courier services to keep VAT invoices with each shipment of cigarettes.
