Wife seeks DMP commissioner's help in locating police officer husband
The Assistant Commissioner Iftekhar Mahmood’s wife Saba Tahsin sent a letter to the DMP Commissioner Mainul Hasan on 24 August, requesting assistance locating her husband
The wife of an assistant commissioner Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has sought the help of the commissioner in finding her husband who went missing on 22 August.
The Assistant Commissioner Iftekhar Mahmood's wife Saba Tahsin sent a letter to the DMP Commissioner Mainul Hasan on 24 August, requesting assistance locating her husband.
"They [police] still have no information on Iftekhar's whereabouts," Saba told The Business Standard over phone today (28 August).
However, when asked if there had been any response from the police since submitting the letter, Saba said, "The commissioner has said that Iftekhar is fine, but he has not revealed where he is."
"We cannot be reassured by his words without knowing Iftekhar's location," she added.
Attempts have been made to contact the commissioner for comment but he couldn't be reached.
In the letter Saba stated that on 5 August, Iftekhar was on duty at the Badda police station. On that day, after the fall of the government, he left the station to save his life, taking his licensed firearm with him.
According to the letter, Iftekhar was with a senior officer at the Air Force's Falcon Tower from 6-10 August. He left his firearm with Air Force Officer Abdullah Ibn Altaf and returned home on 11 August.
The following day, Iftekhar attempted to contact Altaf multiple times to retrieve his firearm but received no response. On 13 August, Iftekhar learned that the Air Force officer was under house arrest.
Knowing this, Iftekhar became concerned about his firearm.
The letter also mentioned that Iftekhar filed a general diary (GD) with Tejgaon police station on 17 August. Four days later, on 22 August, Iftekhar received a call following which he went to the Tejgaon Air Force Headquarters with his driver at 10:30 in the morning.
According to the driver, Iftekhar was received by someone at the entrance of the headquarters. Since then, Iftekhar's phone has been switched off.
Later, Saba made multiple attempts to contact Iftekhar but was unsuccessful.
Iftekhar Mahmood was serving in the Gulshan zone of the metropolitan detective branch.
