Unidentified individuals vandalised Godagari Women's Degree College premises in Rajshahi yesterday (8 February) when an event was taking place to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the institution.
Taslim Uddin, acting principal of the college, said about 15 to 20 people attacked the programme in the afternoon with rods and sticks.
"About 60 to 70 chairs and various musical instruments were vandalised. Many students were injured while running in panic," he added.
Godagari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin said, "Locals vandalised the college premises alleging that music was played during prayers.
"Police members went to the spot and collected video footage. If a complaint is received in this regard, legal action will be taken after investigation."
Taslim Uddin said no music was being played during prayers. "The programme was taking place inside the walls of the college. No sound was supposed to be transmitted outside from there. Moreover, the programme was paused during the Zuhr and Asr prayers. But the attack was carried out on the allegation of playing music during prayers," he said.
