World leaders will extend maximum support to CA Yunus in bringing back laundered money, says press secy
"There was a total of 41 meetings. Everyone assured maximum cooperation in retrieving the laundered money," Alam said about the CA’s meetings during the WEF Annual Meeting 2025 in Davos
World leaders have assured Chief Adviser (CA) Muhammad Yunus of their maximum cooperation in bringing back money laundered from Bangladesh during the Awami League government, said Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the CA.
Shafiqul made the remarks while briefing journalists at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka today (26 January) regarding the CA's meetings during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2025 in Switzerland's Davos.
CA Yunus returned to the country on Saturday after completing his Davos trip.
"This was a historic visit. There was a total of 41 meetings. Most of the world leaders wanted to have a meeting with Dr Yunus. Everyone assured maximum cooperation in retrieving the laundered money," Alam said.
He said, "The first meeting [of the CA] was with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He told Dr Yunus that he would do everything for Bangladesh. We think that long-term relations with Germany will be built up."
Citing a report by the White Paper Committee on Bangladesh's economy, the press secretary said $16 billion was laundered every year during the AL regime.
During his meeting in Davos, the CA discussed how the laundered money could be brought back in a short time.
"We want a free, fair election. Discussion was also held about this," he added.
During his four-day trip to Davos, Chief Adviser Yunus joined at least 47 events during the World Economic Forum annual meeting and other high-level side events.
According to a press statement issued by the CA's Press Wing on 24 January, the CA joined meetings with four heads of government or state, four minister-level dignitaries, 10 heads or top executives of UN/similar organisations, 10 CEOs/high-level businesspersons, 9 WEF organised programmes (Formal Dinner plus Lunch-04), 8 media engagements and two other events.
'Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal is the butcher of Bangladesh'
Meanwhile, severely criticising Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for his alleged involvement in killing Bangladeshis, including children, Shafiqul Alam termed the former home minister as "the butcher of Bangladesh".
"Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal is the butcher of Bangladesh. He is one of the butchers who mercilessly murdered small children, students, workers, and rickshaw pullers in Bangladesh," he said.
Referring to the coverage of Kamal in the Indian Times, an Indian newspaper, Shafiqul Alam said, "Just think about the standard of those who are giving him a platform and reporting on him."
"This is a large-scale international propaganda campaign. No one in the world gives a platform to a butcher. Asaduzzaman Kamal is the Butcher of Bangladesh," the press secretary added.
