Would be a complete waste if ongoing projects halted: Shipping adviser
Now that these projects are ongoing, we are forwarding the cases to the Anti-Corruption Commission and we can appoint a financial consultant, he says
Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain has raised concerns over ongoing projects, including purchase of ships for Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) from China, stating that if the government halts these projects, it could lead to a major waste of resources.
"Many projects initiated during the ousted Awami League government are currently in progress. Some, such as the import of ships from China, are nearing completion. If the current government stops these projects now, all the efforts will be wasted," the adviser told journalists after a meeting with senior officials of BSC at its office today (6 October).
"There's nothing we can do about it now," he added.
Regarding purchase of new ships, the adviser said, "A team is working to determine the costs. We are trying to lower the cost. It's hard to figure out who took the money.
"If anyone did, how will we retrieve it? The dollar rate is currently fluctuating. It was at Tk90-95 then. This will require an inquiry. If the projects are halted, we won't receive the ships."
Sakhawat further said, "Now that these projects are ongoing, we are forwarding the cases to the Anti-Corruption Commission and we can appoint a financial consultant."
