Young people, students were attacked mercilessly by govt forces: Chief Adviser Dr Yunus tells foreign diplomats

Chief Adviser of the interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus paid tributes to students and young people who sacrificed their lives and incurred severe injuries during the quota reform movement and the subsequent violence resulting in the fall of the Hasina government.

At a briefing with foreign diplomats about the current state of the nation at Hotel Intercontinental today (18 August), he described the scenes that he witnessed at hospitals.

"Young people were mercilessly attacked by the forces and student wing of Sheikh Hasina's government. Some have lost their eyes due to rubber bullets being fired at them.

"I couldn't talk to them. [But] I pay my respect for their supreme sacrifices," Yunus said.

At the briefing, Dr Yunus mentioned that students of no other country had to make such sacrifices for achieving their democratic aspirations and upholding their human rights.

"One young person told me- 'I wanted to be a cricketer. Look what has happened to my legs'. There is no way to describe what the young generation of Bangladesh had to endure to ensure that their rights were protected," said Yunus.
