BDRCS observes World Red Cross Red Crescent Day with the theme ‘Unstoppable’
World Red Cross Day, also known as Red Crescent Day, is celebrated on 8 May every year, marking the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) observed World Red Cross Red Crescent Day on Saturday.
This year the day was observed and celebrated with the theme 'Unstoppable,' at BDRCS premises maintaining hygiene rules, read a press release.
Events of the day included a national and red crescent flag-raising ceremony, virtual meeting, volunteer talent hunt, and volunteer recruitment drive.
During the flag-raising ceremony, Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and Former Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh, Md Nur-ur-Rahman, hoisted the National Flag and Secretary-General of the Society, Md Firoz Salahuddin, hoisted the Red Crescent Flag.
Later in the virtual meeting conducted by Deputy Secretary-General of BDRCS, Md Rafiqul Islam, BDRCS Chairman, Major General (Retd) ATM Abdul Wahhab, was chief guest, and the Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and Former Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh, Md Nur-ur-Rahman, was a special guest.
The Secretary-General of the Society handed over a crest to the chairman of the BDRCS during the event.
In his speech as chief guest, BDRCS Chairman, Major General (Retd) ATM Abdul Wahhab, urged everyone to regularly use face masks to prevent being infected with the coronavirus and requested every eligible citizen to take the vaccine.
He also applauded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's efforts to combat the pandemic.
Secretary-General of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Md Firoz Salah Uddin, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Bangladesh Head, Katia Ilina Lawrence, and Sanjeeb Kumar Kafle, head of the country office of The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), also spoke during the event among others.
The meeting was attended by members, officers, and volunteers of the executive committees of 68 Red Crescent units in 64 districts around the country.
