Karnaphuli Paper Mills producing disinfectant to fight Covid-19
After fulfilling its own demand, KPM will provide surplus bleach to other companies
Karnaphuli Paper Mills Ltd (KPM), a government-owned paper pulp and paper manufacturer based in Chattogram, has started manufacturing bleach, a disinfectant, to keep the factory operational by ensuring health safety of all employees and workers.
KPM has taken the initiative after the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) under the industries ministry has given it an order to continue production following health instructions.
After fulfilling its own demand, KPM will provide surplus bleach to other companies, said a press release issued by the industries ministry today.
The statement said KPM started a civil, mechanical and electrical maintenance of its long-inoperative bleach manufacturing plant on April 15 and produced one tonne calcium hypochlorite bleach liquor on April 30.
Previously, the plant was used to manufacture bleach for whitening paper pulp. The disinfectant is now being used to keep the factory environment free from the coronavirus.
KPM Managing Director Engineer Dr MMA Quader said the company is now producing paper from imported pulp and recycled papers.
In the present fiscal year, the factory produced 5,785 tonnes of paper till May 9, which was highest in the last three years.
