10 most Covid-19 affected countries

The dreaded coronavirus has spread to 215 countries and territories worldwide till date since it was first detected in China's Wuhan city last year.  

The pandemic has turned the world upside down, sending billions of people into lockdown or quarantine as health services worldwide struggle to cope along with many other new normal.

According to Worldometer, a total of 4.33 crore confirmed Covid-19 cases and 1.15 million deaths had been recorded worldwide, while 3.19 crore people have recovered from the virus globally as of today.

Let's see where the virus has spread the most, and where it has been most deadly 

USA 

The United States is gripped by a third wave of the coronavirus as case numbers setting daily records. Also, several states are now reporting an increase in new virus infections. Currently, the country holds the top position as the worst-affected country by the pandemic globally, with 8,889,179 confirmed cases and 230,510 deaths. 

Recently, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has said that the US is "not going to control" the pandemic, as cases surge across the country.

The pandemic even playing a vital role in the US election campaign. Former Vice President Joe Biden, who is running for Presidency, attacked Trump on several occasions for his failure of handling the coronavirus pandemic, accusing the president of not caring about the American people. On the contrary, Trump made headlines numerous times for downplaying the virus from the first time it has recorded in the country.

Amid the criticism, President Trump revealed on October 2 that he and the first lady, Melania Trump, tested positive for the virus. After recovering from the virus, he declared his Covid-19 illness a "blessing from God!"

India

Though the number of Covid-19 cases and related deaths in India has started to decline in the last three weeks, the country is still in the second position in total coronavirus cases.

The South Asian nation has recorded a total of 7,909,959 virus cases. However, the country's total coronavirus death toll is 119,030—the third highest in the world after the US and Brazil.

Brazil

Brazil is the third worst-hit country, after the US and India, with 5,394,128 cases; however, with the 157,163 deaths, it ranks second.

President Jair Bolsonaro is often blamed for the virus resurgence as he repeatedly trivialised the pandemic and flouted social distancing guidelines. However, the president also tested positive for Coronavirus.

Russia 

A senior Russian vector-borne disease expert has recently said that number of Russian regions risk facing a second wave of the pandemic that is ten times worse than the first. Russia, which has a population of around 145 million, has reported over 1,513,877cases- the fourth largest tally in the world. The country has recorded a comparatively low number of 26,050 deaths so far.

Despite a rising number of cases, authorities have ruled out blanket restrictions to battle the spread of the disease. The country was under a nationwide lockdown from the end of March till mid-May. 

On Aug 11, 2020, Russia became the first country in the world to approve a Covid-19 vaccine. 

France 

France has reported a record number of new daily infections on Sunday. The country has extended curfews to around two thirds of its population on October 22 as the second wave of the pandemic surged across Europe.

With a total of 1,138,507 virus cases, the country is the fifth worst-hit country. It has reported 34,761 virus-linked deaths so far. 

Spain

Spain was hit hard during the first wave of the coronavirus earlier this year. However, the country controlled the spread of virus infection by imposing a much more restrictive lockdown - one of the toughest in the world.  Like many other European regions, however, Spain has also been hit by a second wave of infections. Hence, the country has declared a national state of emergency and imposed a night-time curfew in a bid to contain the new spike in coronavirus infections.

Spain is in six position with 1,110,372 confirmed coronavirus cases. It has reported a total of 34,752 deaths. 

Argentina  

Despite crossing one million cases recently, the Argentinian authorities have started to ease some restrictions gradually since October 20.

As of October 26, there have been 1,090,589 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Argentina with 28,896 associated fatalities. 

Colombia 

"The second wave is arriving without ever having finished the first," said a public health professor at the University of the Andes in Colombia Luis Jorge Hernandez with frustration.

The country is in the eighth position with 1,015,885 confirmed cases. It has reported a total of 30,154 deaths.

Mexico

Mexico has reported 891,160 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and 88,924 fatalities.

The country is in the fourth position in terms of deaths. The Mexican government says the real number of infected people is likely significantly higher than the confirmed cases.

Peru

Though Peru's overall numbers of coronavirus cases have dropped, officials recently reported cases are spiking again in 12 regions. Peru has registered 888,715 confirmed cases and 34,149 deaths.
