Getting tenant infected with Covid-19 for failing to pay rent
“If I die of coronavirus, you too will”
The incident of a coronavirus-positive owner of a market getting his tenant infected in a horribly odd way has become the talk of the town in Cox's Bazar.
When a tenant was unable to pay his shop's rent because of not having any business amid the pandemic, Jahangir Alam, the owner of the market, furiously grabbed the tenant in an attempt to infect him too, saying, "If I die of coronavirus, you too will."
Sadar Jhingla Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Tipu Sultan confirmed the news, saying three members of his family, including Jahangir Alam, got coronavirus two days ago.
However, on Tuesday afternoon, Jahangir suddenly appeared at the market on Link Road and demanded rent in arrears from the tenant, Salamat, he added.
Cox's Bazar Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmud Ullah Maruf said Jahangir was sent in isolation and other members of his family along with the tenant Salamatwere brought in for tests.
Besides, arrangements were underway to ensure their quarantine, he added.
Angry locals complained that Jahangir, resident of Jhilongjar area, had been riding around in his bike for the past two days collecting rents even though he was infected.
