Abdul Hai Sarkar becomes BAB chairman
His appointment comes following a significant leadership change within the association
Dhaka Bank Chairman Abdul Hai Sarkar was elected as the new chairman of the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) during the association's board meeting today (9 September).
Abdul Hai succeeded Nazrul Islam Mazumdar, who held the position for 17 years.
His appointment comes following a significant leadership change within the association.
Following the fall of the Hasina government on 5 August, the Bangladesh Bank removed Nazrul Islam from his positions as director and chairman of Exim Bank. This also led to his removal as BAB chairman.
In addition to Nazrul Islam, several other BAB committee members, including two vice chairmen, lost their positions as bank directors.
Abdus Samad Labu, chairman of Al-Arafah Islami Bank and brother of S Alam Group Chairman Saiful Alam, was the vice chairman of BAB.
The other vice chairman was Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, vice chairman of United Commercial Bank (UCB) and brother of former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury.
Both the vice chairmen were removed from their respective positions by the Bangladesh Bank. These changes had left the association without a leader.
