Tk23,000 crore in new currency notes to be issued before Eid
The notes will be available to exchange for old notes from 20-28 April
The Bangladesh Bank will issue new currency notes worth Tk23,000 crore, considering the growing demand for new notes on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr this year, read a circular issued by the bank.
The notes will be available to exchange for old notes from 20-28 April (except for government and weekly holidays).
The new currency notes will be issued in Tk10, Tk20, Tk50, Tk100, Tk200, Tk500 and Tk1,000 denominations. As usual, a similar amount of old currencies will be withdrawn from the market, said central bank sources.
"Throughout the year, the central bank issues currency notes as per demand. However, demand often increases before Eid. We have prepared to issue notes worth Tk23,000 crore," said Md Sirajul Islam, executive director and spokesperson of the central bank.
The new notes will be exchanged at various office counters of the Bangladesh Bank. People will be able to exchange currency notes in denominations of Tk10, Tk20, Tk50 and Tk100 from 32 branches of commercial banks in the capital.
One cannot avail new notes more than once. However, while withdrawing notes, one can collect any denomination of coins from the counter regardless of the amount.
The central bank used to exchange new notes for people at special booths before Eid, which was at a halt for two years due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
