Allocation for social safety net increased by Tk 13,709 crore
Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has proposed to include around 11.05 lakh more people under the social security programmes
The government has allocated Tk 95,574 crore for the social safety net, which is 16.83 per cent of total budget and 3.01 per cent of GDP in FY2020-21.
The allocation has increased by Tk 13,709 crore which is 16.75 per cent more than that of the current fiscal year. In the revised budget of FY2019-20, the allocation was Tk 81,865 crore.

The minister said, "All poor senior citizens in 100 upazilas which are most prone to poverty due to the coronavirus outbreak, will be brought under the old age allowance as per the existing policy. This will add 5 lakh new beneficiaries, and an additional allocation of Tk 300 crore will be provided to this programme."
"All widows and women deserted by their husbands in 100 upazilas most prone to poverty due to the coronavirus outbreak will be brought under the coverage of the allowance programme for widows and women deserted by their husbands as per the existing policy," he further said.
