Import duty on onion goes up while on garlic and sugar go down
A proposal has been made to impose a new five percent customs duty on onion imports in the budget for FY 2020-21. This will increase the price of imported onions.
The authorities concerned think that by this move the low-priced imported onion will not be able to cause any harm to the farmers. Earlier, there was no duty on onion import.
On the other hand, import of sugar and garlic has been made easier. The advance tax on the two products has been reduced from five percent to two percent. The people concerned think that these two products can be purchased at a lower price.
