Commerce Minister suggests creating digital marketplace among Commonwealth nations
Munshi also focused on creating discussion opportunities amongst the private sectors in order to increase investment in Commonwealth countries.
Commerce Minister, Tipu Munshi has suggested that the Commonwealth form long-term working groups in order to create a Business-to-Business (B2B) digital marketplace, arrange virtual training and capacity building programme and mitigate adverse effects of climate change.
The Minister made these remarks while attending a Business-to-Business (B2B) high-level virtual Commonwealth meeting, titled "Private Sector Digital and Green Business Recovery" on Monday night.
Munshi also focused on creating discussion opportunities amongst the private sectors in order to increase investment in Commonwealth countries.
He said the digitalisation is moving fast in Bangladesh, thanks to the leadership of Prime Mister Sheikh Hasina, playing an important role in the nation's economic development.
People are capable to complete 98 percent of banking activities via mobile banking system. 65 percent of the population have internet access. Moreover, e-commerce in the country is currently valued at over $1 billion.
In terms of employment, 50% of those engaged in the e-commerce sector are women. Despite the adverse effects of Covid-19, Bangladesh achieved an economic growth of 5.24 percent, the highest in Asia, the Minister added.
Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, presented the keynote address. Commerce Secretary, Md Zafar Uddin; US International Trade Department (Export) Minister, Graham Stuart; Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council Chairman, Lord Marland, participated in the virtual meeting.
