Bangladesh Coast Guard arrests seven pirates with illegal drugs
In a significant operation, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has arrested seven drug smugglers with 35,000 yaba pills in the Shahpari area of Teknaf.
Lieutenant Commander Mohammad Siam-ul-Haq, the Coast Guard headquarters media officer, confirmed this information on Thursday afternoon.
According to him, acting on a tip-off, the BCG Outpost Shahpari, under the East Zone of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, conducted a special operation in the sea adjacent to Sabrang beach at around 0040 hours on Thursday, December 19, 2024. During the operation, an engine-powered wooden boat was observed entering Bangladeshi waters illegally from Myanmar around 0215 hours.
Suspecting the boat's activities, Coast Guard members signalled for it to stop, but the ship ignored the signal and attempted to flee at high speed. The raiding team managed to intercept the ship in the sea near Sabrang. A subsequent search of the seized boat led to the recovery of 35,000 yaba pills and the arrest of 7 drug smugglers.
The seized drugs and the arrested smugglers have been handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station for further legal action, the official added.
