Shilpakala Academy initiates law reform to strengthen governance and transparency
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, an autonomous institution focused on the promotion and research of the arts, has embarked on a new phase of growth and reform under the leadership of its newly appointed Director General, Dr. Syed Jamil Ahmed. Officials, artists, and staff at the Academy believe this leadership change will drive the institution toward more dynamic progress.
In his recent address, Dr. Ahmed emphasized that all operations will adhere strictly to statutory laws and regulations, ensuring financial transparency and accountability. As part of this commitment, the Academy has requested a special audit from the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General. The findings of the audit will be published on the Academy's official website, promoting transparency and public access to information.
Additionally, funds received for organizing events in some offices have been deposited into the Academy's fund, and any financial discrepancies are being reviewed by an internal committee. Dr. Ahmed stated that any detected irregularities or corruption would be dealt with strictly according to the law.
Recognizing the need to fortify the institution against potential weaknesses in its existing regulations, the process of reforming the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Act has already begun. A dedicated committee has been formed to amend the act. The committee is engaging with artists, art critics, and officials to review the 1989 Shilpakala Academy Act, restructure the Shilpakala Academy Council, and propose constructive amendments to enhance the institution's powers and functions.
Through these reforms and active collaboration with all stakeholders, the Academy aspires to become a more inclusive cultural institution, preserving and promoting Bangladesh's rich artistic and cultural heritage on the global stage.
