Yasmeen Lari inspires future architects at BRAC University
BRAC University's Department of Architecture recently hosted Yasmeen Lari, Pakistan's first female architect and a renowned advocate of humanitarian architecture, for the 150th Angan Lecture Series on its Merul Badda campus.
Lari delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled "Save the Planet, Save Humanity: Decarbonize, Decolonize, Democratize Architecture", emphasizing architecture's potential to combat climate change, promote equity, and enhance community resilience. She remarked, "Architecture is not just about structures; it's about solutions that heal the planet and empower communities."
The session included a lively discussion moderated by Department Chairperson Zainab Faruqui Ali, highlighting Lari's diverse works, from brutalist villas and heritage restoration to humanitarian relief projects, and their relevance to Bangladesh's architectural practices.
As part of her visit, Lari led a Winter School where students constructed a Zero-Carbon Bamboo building, showcasing disaster-resilient and sustainable design. A multi-disciplinary session further explored her Barefoot Social Architecture philosophy, prioritising zero-carbon housing and empowering marginalized communities.
Lari's humanitarian approach to architecture has earned her accolades like the Royal Institute of British Architects' Royal Gold Medal in 2023 and the Jane Drew Prize in 2020.
