The traders of Rangpur division have sought tax waiver for at least five years for local products including shataranji, earthenware and other agricultural products.
Besides, they have demanded equal allocation for Rangpur in the budget like other divisions of the country.
The chambers of commerce of eight districts under Rangpur division raised the demand at a pre-budget discussion organised by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) at Rokeya Hall of RDRS Bhaban in Rangpur city on Saturday.
NBR Chairman Abu Hena Rahmatul Munim attended the discussion, organised with an aim to prepare the budget for the fiscal year 2021-22, as the chief guest.
Presenting various proposals to take Rangpur forward in the forthcoming budget, Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industries President Mostafa Sohrab Chowdhury Titu said, "Rangpur is an agricultural and promising region but it is neglected. Budget allocations are lower than in other divisions. We get no special advantage for the development of local industry."
He said there are four ports in Rangpur. If these can be fully activated continuing the import-export activities, the socio-economic situation in the region will be totally changed.
He demanded a five-year tax waver for local products in Rangpur.
Claiming that the Rangpur division is not neglected in budget, NBR Chairman Munim said, "Rangpur division has come a long way now. We get a lot of taxes from here. So, I give importance to the Rangpur division. Rangpur is being developed day by day. You can achieve a lot on your own. We will cooperate fully."
Citing that NBR is going to be automated, he said many people complain of harassment in paying taxes. The issue of harassment comes if there is any issue of taking illegal opportunities. So, we are making arrangements to collect taxes in an automated manner.
Munim said the mentality of paying taxes needs to be created for the development of the country. If taxes are collected properly, the development of the country will be achieved. If you pay more taxes, there will be no recession in business. Rather businesses will see maximum growth. So, you have to pay more and more taxes.
He further said that tax will be collected through automation in future to stop harassment and irregularities in tax collection. There will be no meeting between the taxpayer and the recipient. Automatic tax can be assessed and paid submitting required papers through specific apps.
NBR Member (Tax Policy) Alamgir Hossain and NBR Member (VAT Policy) Masud Sadiq, among others, also attended the event as special guests.
