6 Gazipur factories resume operation, 1 declares holiday amid protest against workers' layoff
A factory of Rezaul Apparels factory yesterday dismissed 87 workers without prior notice, who are now protesting demanding reinstatement of their jobs
Readymade garment workers laid off from a Rezaul Apparels Private Limited factory in Gazipur's Konabari protested against their dismissal and demanded the reinstatement of workers this morning (4 December).
Meanwhile, six Islam Group of Industries Limited factories, previously shut down amid workers' protests, resumed operations.
The protest in Rezaul Apparels disrupted factory operations, and the authorities declared a holiday as the situation became chaotic.
The industrial police later went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
"We have spoken with the workers to control the situation and discussed the matter with the factory authorities. The situation is now under control," Morshed Zaman, an inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police-2 [Konabari zone].
According to police and worker sources, a Rezaul Apparels factory inside BSCIC Industrial City dismissed 87 workers yesterday (3 December) without prior notice, causing severe financial difficulties and uncertainty for their families.
As a result, the 87 dismissed workers protested in front of the factory's main gate this morning, demanding the reinstatement of their jobs.
The protesting workers claimed the dismissal process was unjust and violated the labour laws. They have demanded immediate re-employment and continued to chant slogans supporting their cause.
When asked, Mohammad Rezaul Hossain (Ripon), managing director of Rezaul Apparels Private Limited, said all dues owed to the workers were paid in accordance with the labour laws.
"However, the workers are protesting at the factory's main gate, demanding re-employment," he added.
Rezaul mentioned that the factory was closed for the day due to security concerns. "We are attempting to resolve the issue through discussions with worker representatives and the workers themselves."
Meanwhile, all sections of the six Islam Group factories that reopened today are operating without any reports of further incidents of unrest as of filing this report at 2pm.
