Shipbreaking yard accidents: Tk1.14 crore given to 19 workers’ families
Seventeen workers were killed in shipbreaking yard accidents in 2018, while the number was 16 in 2017
A total of Tk1.14 crore has been given to the 19 families of workers, who were killed in accidents at different shipbreaking yards this year.
The workers were killed in fire, after falling iron plates and curtains on them and by inhaling poisonous gas at the yards.
The information was disclosed by the office of the Deputy Inspector General of the Directorate of Inspection of Factories and Establishments (Chattogram) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian said, "Shipbreaking is a risky sector. Workers work here are at risk of life."
"The government is working to increase awareness of the owners and workers of all sectors including shipbreaking," she added.
The state minister also said the inspectors from the inspection directorate of factories and establishments are conducting regular inspection at shipbreaking yards and making workers aware.
