1,500 tonnes of hilsa to be exported to India this year
In the last 10 days, 805.7 tonnes of hilsa have been exported to India through the Benapole checkpost
Bangladesh will export 1,475 tonnes of hilsa to India this month, worth around Tk1.1 crore, at the rate of around Tk850 per kilogramme.
Mahbubur Rahman, assistant director of the fisheries department and fisheries quarantine officer in Benapole, said the commerce ministry has allowed nine exporters to send hilsa to the neighbouring country.
On the occasion of Durga Puja, 805.7 tonnes of hilsa, worth $77.69 lakh, has been exported to India through Benapole check post in the last 10 days. The average weight of each fish is between 1-1.2 kilogrammes.

Meanwhile, Janata Fish in Jashore, Ripa Enterprise, Tiger Trading, Union Venjers, Gazi Fresh Sea Food in Dhaka, Jahanbad Sea Foods in Khulna, Seven Star Fish Processing Limited in Pabna, and Mahim Enterprise in Barishal have exported fish to India.
C & F agent Nila Enterprise has been appointed to export the fish from Benapole Customs.
When the consignment of hilsa reached Benapole Port at noon on September 14, the customs and fisheries department completed the formalities and permitted export in the afternoon. Hilsa has been sent to India in phases till September 28, confirmed Benapole Customs commissioner Azizur Rahman.
C & F agent Mahitul Haque said Bangladeshi traders were sending hilsa to Kolkata. Apart from Kolkata, this hilsa will be sold in different markets of West Bengal.
On August 1, 2012, Bangladesh banned the export of hilsa. Last year, the government allowed the export of 507 tonnes of hilsa, at the rate of Tk507 per kilogramme, as a "gift" for Durga Puja. That year, the last consignment of hilsa fish from Bangladesh entered India on October 10.
