Cyclone Amphan kills 6, injures 1 in Jashore
The super cyclone swept through the district from the evening to midnight on Wednesday, packing winds of up to 167 km/h speed
Six people in Jashore were crushed to death inside their homes when trees fell on their houses after super cyclone Amphan roared into the district on Wednesday.
The diseased are China Begum (45) and her daughter Rabeya Khatun (13) of Hudo Chowgachha area of Chowgachha municipality, Gopal Chandra Biswas of Malopara area, Moyna Khatun (40) of Goga Paschimpara area and Muktar Ali (65) of Bagachhara Jamtala area of Sharsha upazila, and Doly Khatun (45) of Dorajhat Budpara area in Bagharpara upazila of the district.
China Begum's son Alamin (22) was injured in the incident.
Confirming the casualties, Jashore Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shofiul Arif said, "Around 1,67,500 houses have been damaged in storm."
According to the meteorological department office in the district, wind speeds in the area reached around 135 km/h at around 8pm on Wednesday.
At around midnight, the wind speeds reached around 167 km/h and later the winds died down around 2am Thursday.
The high-speed winds were also accompanied by 121 millimeters heavy rainfall in the district.
