Only 10,000 out of 60,000 reach shelter in Hatia
There are 185 cyclone shelters in Hatia with the capacity to accommodate 80,000 people, while around 60,000 living in the risky zone alongside the embankment
Only 16 percent of the people living under the cyclone prone zone in Hatia upazila have taken shelter in cyclone shelters till Wednesday morning.
Md Rezaul Karim, upazila nirbahi officer of Hatia, told The Business Standard, "Only 16 percent has taken shelter so far and others will take shelter by afternoon."
"There are 185 cyclone shelters in Hatia with the capacity to accommodate 80,000 people, while around 60,000 living in the risky zone alongside the embankment," he added.
Upazila Project Officer Zahid Hasan said,"Around 20,000 people are living in Nijhum Dwip, a separate island union of Hatia. They are being brought to the cyclone shelters."
"Since morning gusty wind has been blowing over Hatia. The tidal waves are slightly higher than usual," said Papia Sultana, station manager of Radio Sagor Dwip.
"The scenario today is fluctuating between sunny and cloudy. Although it rained in the daytime yesterday, but last night was just cloudy with no rain," she added.
