Love during autumn of life
An honest urge to grow old with that special person who once blew your heart away with love, romance and held your hand through thick and thin.
We all have hummed that heart-warming song at least once:
"I want to grow old with you
I want to die lying in your arms"
An honest urge to grow old with that special person who once blew your heart away with love, romance and held your hand through thick and thin.
In our society, the idea of romance seems eternally anchored in ageism – it revolves around young adults and teens. Romance between senior couples is not really given much space, if not warmly accepted.
In the larger picture of things, age is not really a barrier for romance. Rather, to have a sound mental health, this can be an effective therapy.
When youngsters indulge in romance, they travel through emotional rollercoasters and leave no stone unturned to explore each other's interesting sides. Old age romance contrasts with young love in the emotional intensity the latter display. Elderly couples are more mature hence calm and poised in their approach. Having lived with each other under one roof for a long period of time, they have already riddle out each other's mysteries.
The first step to keep yourselves alive at old age is to revive the romance. To breathe new life into the old relationship, couples have to stop suppressing their emotions and desires in the first place. Societal pressure cannot always be taken into account when it comes to living an emotionally healthy life together.
They can rethink and relive those moments that once brought them closer. Simply reminiscing the past memories and looking through the old photo albums together can awaken the lost spark of romance. Sometimes going for a long walk in a serene suburb road holding hand in hand in silence will create magic. Just because two human beings have seen many springs together, the colour of their life does not fade away.
Another popular illusion among us is marriage kills romance. Sharing household chores pulls down the joy of sharing meaningful stares. Boring family discussions replace romantic conversations. How about a partner putting some red roses on the dining table instead of vegetables during some evenings! That would not only break the monotony of long-term conjugal relationship but also warm the significant other's heart.
Elderly people usually do not envisage explosive level enthusiasm about sexuality. Sharing and caring for each other's feelings is all that their hearts crave for. Then again, there is no restriction against physical intimacy at old age, if physique allows. Going for morning walk or hitting the gym together is not a bad idea either.
After surviving many summers and storms shoulder to shoulder, love between an elderly partners should never remain unidimensional.
Since elderly couple look at it with a deeper understanding of life. Love or romance always comes packed with emotion. Emotion felt for each other over the years adds value to the relationship. A quality relationship grows out of the stability the couple has managed to achieve over time. A couple, no matter how old, should feel that they have still time to care for each other and enjoy the rest of their life together. Old age romance can thus be as heartwarming as teenage romance. All they need to do is let their hearts guide them after putting aside all other doubts and reluctance!
