Dates and Nuts Barfis: The smart and healthy alternative snack
Rannar Bazar BD’s dates and nuts barfi offers a sugar-free and guilt-free treat with nutrient-rich ingredients making it a wholesome snack for all ages
At first glance, the barfi resembled a miniature halwa, neatly cut into rounds and nestled in parchment paper.
The first bite revealed a chewy texture from dates balanced by a nutty crunch, with warm, earthy flavours and a touch of ghee that created a smooth, fudgy consistency.
Rannar Bazar BD has crafted these dates and nuts barfi as a wholesome snack for all ages. Owner MD Moshiur Rahman emphasises, "We prioritise quality over quantity. Our products are home-prepared with all necessary precautions, making them suitable for everyone, from children to the elderly."
Loyal customer Eram shared, "With Maryam dates costing 1,000-1,200 taka per kilogram, this 1,350-taka barfi packet feels like a great deal, with a super-balanced taste." Another customer, Kaspia Ahmed, described it as "a quick energy boost, perfect for curbing sugar cravings healthily."
Rahman highlights the need for nutritious snacks, noting that the barfi offers a healthier alternative to traditional Bangladeshi snacks. Unlike calorie-heavy barfis made with condensed milk and sugar, this version uses dates, almonds, pistachios and clarified butter, resulting in a sugarless, nutritious treat.
Dr Shaila Sabrin, Chief Dietitian at Asgor Ali Medical College, advises moderate portions, as even nutritious foods can be over-consumed. Rahman confirms each piece is portion-controlled, with 160 calories, 0 cholesterol, 16g carbs, 2.8g protein and 8g fat.
Sabrin recommends these barfis as a wholesome protein bar substitute, noting their affordability and health benefits compared to commercial options.
While these barfis are beneficial, Sabrin advises diabetic patients to consume them cautiously. They're ideal for children and pregnant mothers and as a pre-workout snack for health-conscious eaters. Dr Shanta Akter from Islami Bank Hospital agrees, noting they're suitable for those who find raw nuts hard to consume, though raw is always best.
Alongside Rannar Bazar BD, pages like Kraft n Kitchen also offer similar barfis, expanding options for healthy snacks. Each 500-gram pack, containing 25 pieces, is priced under Tk700 —perfect for guilt-free indulgence.
