Gel nail extensions have become a global phenomenon, and Bangladesh is no exception.
This innovative technique offers a way to enhance the appearance of nails without compromising their health. With its introduction in the local market, it has sparked a wave of excitement among fashion-forward individuals and nail art enthusiasts.
There's a good chance that many of the gorgeous manicures with embellished tips and little works of art you are seeing online were made possible by gel nail extensions.
These extensions involve applying a gel-based substance to the natural nail, which is then cured under UV or LED light to create a durable and natural-looking enhancement.
"I like gel extensions because the process is faster than other extensions and you can get so many textures in this form," said Ruchita Mehzabeen, a fashion enthusiast and a student at North South University.
Popular for their flexibility and long-lasting results, gel extensions are ideal for those who desire added length, strength, and a flawless finish.
Located in the Mirpur DOHS Shopping Complex, Saki Vabna is a beauty salon offering state-of-the-art nail extension services at budget-friendly prices.
Saki Vabna, the founder, brings years of expertise in nail art and nail extensions. Certified in the Fundamentals of Makeup Artistry, she has also pursued advanced training in nail extensions from Bangkok, Thailand.
"Gel extensions last approximately one month. There is no specific aftercare required for these services. However, lighter nail colours may need extra care to preserve their original shade, and the durability of all extensions ultimately relies on proper maintenance," said a representative of Saki Vabna.
Acrylic extension
While gel extensions are favoured for their lightweight and glossy appearance, acrylic nails remain a classic choice for those seeking sturdier enhancements.
Acrylic nails are created by combining a liquid monomer with a powdered polymer, which hardens to form a strong and durable base. They are ideal for individuals who need more robust nails and can be customised to a wide variety of shapes and lengths.
For the extension, at first, with a manicure, the nails and their surface are cleaned. The nails are cut, filed, shaped, and disinfected.
Then, acrylic nail extensions are created with the help of plastic tips or forms. In the case of acrylic colour designs, topcoats are applied at the end to keep them secure.
"Depending on one's natural nail growth and how they maintain the nails, these extensions can last up to two to three months. If you eat with your hands, the nails will get spice stains. Things like doing the dishes or washing clothes would also damage the nails," said Farhana Samad, a certified nail artist.
Farhana's tips for healthy nails include taking vitamin D, refraining from nail-biting, massaging cuticle oil every night, and having regular manicures and pedicures.
Press-on nails
If you do not have the time to visit salons or spend a hefty amount of money on nails, you can always resort to press-on nails.
Press-on nails are artificial nail enhancements that are pre-shaped, pre-designed, and ready to apply directly to your natural nails using an adhesive. They are typically made of acrylic or gel material and come in various lengths, shapes (like square, almond, stiletto), and designs, ranging from minimalistic to intricate nail art.
To apply, you simply stick them on using the provided adhesive tabs or glue. They are usually temporary but can last from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the quality of the nails and the adhesive used.
