Riding through life: Udoy's journey with the Suzuki Gixxer Fi ABS 2022
Given the substantial upgrade the last facelift came with, it’s hard to match what the Suzuki Gixxer Fi ABS offers in terms of value, even in the current market
For nearly a decade, the Suzuki Gixxer has been dominant in the two-wheeler segment of Bangladesh. Providing a combination of style, quality, balanced performance and price, the bike became a favourite among buyers looking to get their first 150cc motorbike.
Although Suzuki Bangladesh still continues to sell the original Gixxer Monotone, a completely new Gixxer was launched in 2019, which again received a facelift in 2021, opting for a new FI (Fuel Injected) engine and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System).
Because of a cheaper price tag, many buyers opt for the original Gixxer Monotone. However, others believe that given the substantial upgrade the last facelift came with, it's hard to match what the Suzuki Gixxer Fi ABS offers in terms of value, even in the current market. For this feature, we interviewed Samiul Hasan Udoy, a 22-year-old CSE student of North South University, who purchased this bike on December 31, 2023.
"Before I made up my mind that this [Gixxer FI ABS] is the right one for me, I researched a number of possibilities," Udoy mentioned to The Business Standard, "However, I found that the Gixxer's appealing appearance and affordable pricing fit my needs both financially and personally."
After riding the Gixxer for almost 3,000 kilometres, he has come across a variety of difficulties as well as memorable moments, which highlight both the bike's advantages and drawbacks.
In terms of looks, there's barely any other model that's as angular yet buffed as the Gixxer. The flattened out headlight draws mixed feelings from fans. In terms of visibility, however, it's a massive upgrade from its predecessor.
*For me personally, the angle makes it blend well with the bike's overall sportiness," Uday said, "it's the athletic and sleek appearance of the Gixxer that caught my attention."
Compared to others in the segment, the build quality is strong and the design is both attractive and practical. However, Uday went with a few minor modifications to make it stand out. For example, the bodykit, right below the fuel tank, is wrapped in custom maroon stickers, giving it a more fashionable look, while an underbody kit sourced from a Gixxer 250 gives it a wider stance.
Powering the bike is a 155cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, paired to a 5-speed transmission. Among bikers of Bangladesh, the Gixxer is known for its balanced yet reliable performance. The Gixxer FI ABS just delivers that.
On paper, it produces a maximum power of 13.6 PS at 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 13.8 Nm at 6,000 rpm.
Unlike the original Gixxer, according to Udoy, the bike's performance was rather limited. It may not please riders seeking speedier performance. It is rather more suited for relaxed rides than sprinting.
"For city rides, it's excellent, but for fast-paced excitement, it may not be enough." Udoy confirmed.
The fuel injected engine ensures smooth yet stable acceleration. Replacing the previous carburetor engine with a fuel injected one, it uses less gasoline while still ensuring the sufficient torque for day-to-day city rides.
While fuel economy might vary from rider to rider, Udoy gets around 38 km/l in the city and 42 km/l on the highway.
"Since I bear the expenses for my own bike myself, a decent fuel economy is a huge deal for me." Udoy stated.
Udoy emphasises the bike's compact design that ensures nimble handling and makes it ideal for navigating through congested areas.
In fact, the Gixxer's ease of handling is one of its outstanding qualities. According to Udoy, the ride is responsive and smooth, making it ideal for use in cities. The bike's agility makes it simple to control and make rapid turns in both open and congested traffic.
This is further assisted by its suspension setup that's sufficiently soft to absorb shocks on rough terrains, yet sturdy enough to manage tight turns.
One of the highlights of Udoy's bike is the ABS. It ensures dependable braking at all times. Given the light kerb weight of about 136 kg, the braking system is adequate and slows the bike down while ensuring a balance shift of weight.
In unexpected or challenging circumstances, the ABS system increases safety even more. Udoy decided to enhance it further by updating the brake pump to an RCB E2 model.
But the Gixxer has a certain drawback. In warmer weather, Udoy found that the bike has a tendency to heat up after extended rides and can be uncomfortable. On lengthy trips, this may mean stopping more frequently for breaks.
The 2022 Suzuki Gixxer Fi ABS is a stylish, capable, and reasonably priced motorbike that delivers a lot of value. The Gixxer is a fantastic option for someone who wants a bike for regular pleasure rides as well as everyday commuting. It is efficient, comfortable and delivers safe yet excellent handling.
Udoy believes its advantages outweigh its drawbacks, like a limited top speed or the heating ups after extended rides. Hence, beyond just being an attractive bike, the Gixxer is dependable and offers steady performance for daily riding. For individuals requiring a bike without breaking the bank for maintenance, like students, young professionals, or both, the Suzuki Gixxer Fi ABS is a reliable choice that's worth considering.
