Gorosthane Sabdhan: When Sandip did justice to his father’s story

Feluda looks through the rear view mirror and notices a microbus following their car. Intense music rolls in the background. Feluda keeps an eye on the car while talking to Jotayu and Topse.  

This scene sets the mood for another amazing Feluda film, "Gorosthane Sabdhan," directed by Sandip Ray. 

As an avid fan of the works of Satyajit Ray, I have read all Feluda books and watched pretty much all the films. 

My personal favourite Feluda film is "Joi Baba Felunath," the second and last Feluda film directed by the maestro himself.  I am also a big fan of actor Soumitra Chatterjee, my favourite Feluda on screen. 

Satyajit Ray immortalised the character of Feluda through the pages of his books. Later, the master director made two Feluda films as well. 

I have always wondered how difficult or under pressure Sandip Ray feels when he makes any film based on his father's novel, script or story.

Sandip Ray has undoubtedly brought Feluda back to life with authenticity. And Sabyasachi Chakrabarty has reincarnated Feluda on the silver screen in Sandip Ray's films. 

Over the years, Sabyasachi collaborated with Sandip in many Feluda films, which has now made him the face of Feluda series. 

Based on the book with the same name, the story of "Gorosthane Sabdhan" revolves around the fascinating history of the Godwin family, dating back to 19th century Lucknow. Feluda solves a mystery that is related to the Godwin family. 

The action packed thriller has a contemporary setting, which is why Sandip Ray modified the story to suit the script. Yet, he made the presence of Sidhu jetha (Haradhan Bandyopadhyay) very relevant. Sandip Ray adeptly penned the script adapted from the book. 

Bibhu Bhattacharya as Lalmohan Ganguly, aka Jatayu, was witty and charismatic in the film; as authentic as the character is described in the book. Saheb Bhattacharjee as Topse also acted well. 

As an onscreen sleuth, Sabyasachi has become a synonym for Feluda for his physical appearance and dedication to the character.

In "Gorosthane Sabdhan," Sabyasachi re-established the brilliance of Feluda once again. 

However, if one has to compare Sabyasachi as Feluda in the 1996 film "Baksho Rahashya" to "Gorosthane Sabdhan" which was released in 2010, signs of Sabyasachi aging are clearly visible while Pradosh Mitter, aka Feluda, is stuck at a certain age, going by the books.

Cinematographer Sunirmal Mazumdar and Sasanko Palit followed some of the classic Ray camera techniques in the film. If for nothing else, you should watch Gorosthane Sabdhan" for the cemetery scenes and a few night shots. 

Sandip Ray composed the music for this film while he also used Feluda's theme music composed by Satyajit Ray. 

On-location noise and background music complemented the suspenseful scenes in the film. 

Feluda continues to thrive on the love of his fans generation after generation. The almost flawless character, our very own Bangali detective, mesmerises us with his unmatched intellect, both, in the books and in the films.
