Meghalaya police deny targeting Bangladesh-bound Bhutanese trucks
Boulder-laden Bhutanese trucks were stopped because of rash driving, excess weight, claim authorities
Meghalaya police on Friday denied allegations of ‘unnecessarily targeting’ Bangladesh bound boulder-laden trucks from Bhutan and claimed the trucks were being sent back because they entered the state without proper notification to the Indian administration.
Police also said the Bhutanese trucks were stopped on Tura-Paikan-Dalu New Highways (NH) because of rash driving and because the quantity of boulders was beyond permissible limits, in gross violation of the Indian Motor Vehicle Act.
Referring to the West Garo Hills police, the Meghalaya-based publication North East Now reported the Bhutanese trucks were subjected to weighing at Weighbridge at Dalu in presence of the officials of district administration, police, forest and transport.

During the process, the trucks were found carrying boulders beyond permissible limits.
Following the incident, a delegation of Bhutanese traders, along with officials of the Bhutanese consulate, visited West Garo Hills district.
