The price of broiler chicken has increased by 43.18% in a year
For more than a month and a half, the price of broiler chicken has been rising in retail markets in Dhaka along with other daily necessities including rice, oil and sugar.
Broiler chicken that meets the demand of protein for limited-income group people is now being sold at Tk165-170 per kg, which is 43.18% higher than the same period last year, according to a market analysis by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).
Besides, the price of Pakistani cock or Sonali chicken has been increased by Tk50-60 per kg and it is being sold at Tk350-360 per kg in the retail markets in the capital.

A month and a half ago, broiler chicken sold for Tk130-135 per kg, and Pakistani cock or Sonali chicken for Tk280-300.
Traders have blamed the price hike of chicken on short supply.
However, consumers complained that traders are raising the price of chicken ahead of the upcoming Ramadan as the demand increases during the month.
Asked about the reason for the price hike, Ariful Islam, a chicken vendor at Karwan Bazar, said the demand for chicken has increased but the supply has not.
Mentioning that the price of chicken goes up before Ramadan every year, Abdul Khaleq, a private employee who came to buy chickens at Karwan Bazar, told The Business Standard, "This year, traders hiked the price a couple of months ahead. So, we have to suffer for a longer time."
Not just chicken, the price of beef has already gone up to Tk580-600, which was Tk560-580. Buyers have claimed that sellers have increased price ahead of Shab-e-Barat.
The price of non-brand sugar has also jumped this week and it is being sold at Tk72 per kg, up from Tk68. The price of packaged sugar has climbed to Tk78 from Tk75 in a month.
Earlier, the price of edible oil has gone up twice. The TCB says non-brand soybean oil price has jumped by 34% and bottled soybean oil by 28% in a year.
Meanwhile, oil traders have again proposed to the government to raise prices on the pretext of volatility in the international market, even after raising the price of edible oil twice in two months.
Besides, the price of rice and flour has gone up by Tk1-2 per kg.
