DoE and UNIDO organise cleanup drive in Sonargaon to combat plastic pollution
The Department of Environment (DoE), in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy, conducted a cleanup and awareness campaign today at Sonargaon. The initiative aimed to highlight the harmful effects of single-use plastics (SUP) on the environment and health while promoting sustainable alternatives.
The event, attended by notable figures such as Ms Farzana Rahman, UNO of Sonargaon, and Dr Zaki Uz Zaman, UNIDO Country Representative for Bangladesh, underscored the importance of collective efforts in addressing plastic pollution.
Ms Farzana Rahman emphasized the power of community-driven initiatives, stating, "Plastic pollution impacts every aspect of our ecosystem. This effort exemplifies how community participation and informed actions can yield lasting benefits."
Dr Zaki Uz Zaman stressed the need for a collaborative approach, remarking, "Tackling plastic pollution demands multisectoral involvement. Empowering local communities and building partnerships is essential for sustainable solutions that protect the environment and foster socio-economic development."
The campaign involved over 300 volunteers from 14 local organisations, including BD Clean, Corona Jodha, and Environment Protection and Development Society, who participated in cleanup activities, waste bin installations, and awareness efforts. Their dedication reflected the community's resolve to create a cleaner and healthier environment.
This event is part of the "Integrated Approach Towards Sustainable Plastic Use and Marine Litter Prevention in Bangladesh" project, with a focus on raising consumer awareness under its second component. The Sonargaon drive builds on the success of similar campaigns across the country, advancing efforts to minimise plastic waste and encourage responsible practices.
UNIDO and the Royal Norwegian Embassy reiterated their support for the DoE and local communities, reaffirming their commitment to achieving a sustainable, plastic-free future.
