ACI Launches ACI Pure Fortified Rice First Time in Bangladesh
The launch of ACI Pure Fortified Rice represents a transformative step in addressing the nutritional challenges faced in Bangladesh.
As the staple food for millions, rice holds a central place in the culture and diet of the nation. This everyday grain offers a unique opportunity to turn daily meals into a powerful tool for combating malnutrition. By enriching rice with essential nutrients, ACI Foods Limited – Rice Unit is making significant strides toward improving public health and securing a healthier future for the population.
What is fortified rice?
Fortified rice is much more than an essential food item — it is a scientific innovation. Developed to tackle micronutrient deficiencies, fortified rice is enriched with essential vitamins and minerals. Each 100 grams of ACI Pure Fortified Rice delivers:
· 150- 215 mcg of Vitamin A to improve vision and strengthen immunity,
· 5-7 mg of iron to combat anaemia,
· 3.5-4.5 mg of zinc to support growth and enhance the immune system,
· 0.4-0.6 mg of Vitamin B1 (thiamine) for energy metabolism,
· 130-190 mcg of Vitamin B9 (folic acid) to support cell growth and reduce birth defects, and
· 1.00-1.45 mcg of Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) to maintain healthy nerves and blood cells
This innovation is brought to Bangladesh with the technical support of the World Food Programme (WFP), which has been a pioneer in implementing fortified rice programs worldwide. From the Philippines to India and Cambodia, WFP has successfully introduced fortified rice to combat malnutrition in vulnerable populations. With ACI's commercial expertise and WFP's global experience, this product brings a proven solution to the homes of Bangladeshi consumers.
Dr Mahbub from WFP states, "Just as iodised salt and vitamin A-enriched oil are diet staples, we believe fortified rice will gain similar popularity, as seen in countries where it's mandatory. It provides six essential nutrients, supported by scientific evidence of its health benefits."
"It is designed to maintain its nutritional value during cooking or washing, making it easy to prepare like regular rice. Additionally, it is safe for regular consumption, with no risk of overconsumption or side effects," he added.
Why is ACI launching fortified rice?
Malnutrition remains a critical issue in Bangladesh, affecting 28% of children and 45% of women. Such deficiencies undermine not only health but also the nation's potential to grow and prosper.
Rice is the cornerstone of Bangladeshi diets. The average daily consumption is 328 grams per person, contributing 1,197 calories, more than half the caloric needs of an average adult. As the main meal of most households, rice provides an ideal platform for delivering essential nutrients.
ACI is guided by core values such as customer focus, innovation, and continuous improvement, all aimed at delivering wellness solutions. From low-GI rice to heart-friendly rice bran oil, the company has consistently prioritised health-conscious products. The introduction of fortified rice marks a meaningful step forward, designed to support future generations with enhanced cognitive development, stronger physical health, and improved well-being.
The science behind it
The fortification of rice is achieved through cutting-edge extrusion technology, where nutrient-enriched kernels are seamlessly blended with regular rice. This process ensures the nutrients remain intact even after washing and cooking.
Evidence of its efficacy comes from research conducted under the Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) Program, supported by the government of Bangladesh. Studies revealed remarkable improvements among participants:
- a 4.8% reduction in anaemia among women who consumed fortified rice for 12 months,
- improved zinc levels, contributing to better growth and immunity, and
- a significant decline in the prevalence of subclinical Vitamin A deficiency
These findings underscore the potential of fortified rice to bring about measurable improvements in public health.
