The proposal by the Gautam Adani-led Adani Group, compared to the Reliance Group, was innovative and unprecedented across South Asia. A private research report published in 2022 stated that to purchase electricity from this project, Bangladesh would pay Adani over $11 billion in "capacity charges" over the next 25 years — an amount sufficient to build three Padma Bridges or nine Karnaphuli Tunnels in the country.
