NSU holds seminar on innovations in drug discovery
The North South University's (NSU) Pharmaceutical Sciences Department yesterday (5 December) hosted a seminar on "Innovations in Drug Discovery: From Cancer to Infectious Diseases", where the latest breakthroughs and future directions in drug discovery were discussed.
The seminar featured Dr Khondoker Miraz Rahman, professor at the School of Cancer and Pharmaceutical Sciences, King's College London, UK, and Antimicrobial Research Theme lead at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, as the keynote speaker, reads a press release.
He is also the director of the Doctoral Training Programme in the Industrial Case Training Programme (largest industrial case training programme in the UK). He has supervised more than 35 of international PhD students and also secured 80 research grants worth 6.5 million pounds.
Dr Khandoker Miraz shared insights from his extensive research work and emphasised the critical need for innovative approaches in dealing with both cancerous and infectious diseases. He talked about the challenges during completing his PhD. Later on he talked about his extensive research in Antibody Drug Conjugated cancer therapy.
"It is important to develop a drug that is not toxic for the body and doesn't get involved with cardiac health," he said.
He also shared his insights on antimicrobial drugs and debunked the myths regarding the use of efflux pump in such drug formulation.
Speaking at the event, Professor Dr Mohammad Hossain Shahriar, chairman of NSU's Pharmaceutical Department, underscored the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry.
NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury and Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Abdur Rob Khan were also present at the event.
