3 labour leaders detained in Ashulia amid unrest
The arrestees are Md Sarowar Hossain, president of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Unity Federation, Md Mahbub Alam Bacchu, general secretary of the organisation, and Faridul Islam, organising secretary of the National Garment Workers Federation
Joint forces today (14 December) detained three labour leaders and handed them over to Ashulia Police Station amid workers' unrest.
The arrestees are Md Sarowar Hossain, president of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Unity Federation, Md Mahbub Alam Bacchu, general secretary of the organisation, and Faridul Islam, organising secretary of the National Garment Workers Federation.
"The joint force handed over four people to us in the evening, including three labour leaders. However, we are not yet sure why they were detained. Once the joint force files a complaint or case, we can provide more details," Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakar Siddique told The Business Standard.
Colleagues of the detained leaders speculate that their arrest might be related to the ongoing labour unrest in Ashulia.
Nazma Akhtar, secretary (public relations) of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Unity Federation, told TBS that Sarowar was at a meeting of the Asia Floor Wage Alliance-Bangladesh in Shyamoli this afternoon and was called to a military camp from there and later detained.
"Similarly, Bacchu was also detained," she added.
Abdul Halim, general secretary of the National Garment Workers Federation (Ashulia Regional Committee), said Faridul Islam, was called to a camp in Ashulia in the afternoon, where he was detained.
