They are – Mubin Al Mamun, 20, son of Brig Gen (retd) Abdullah Al Mamun of Mirpur DOHS, Mirajul Karim, 22, son of Rizwanul Karim of Mirpur's Pirerbagh area, and Asif Chowdhury, son of Bahauddin Chowdhury of Uttara Sector 13.
Later in the day, a Narayanganj court has sent the three to jail following the filing of a case by the deceased's father Masud Mia at Rupganj police station.
The court also fixed Sunday for a hearing in the case filed by the deceased student's father Masud Mia at Rupganj police station today, said his lawyer Advocate Rezaul Karim Khan Reza.
According to the case details, Muhtasim Masud, 22, a student of Buet's Computer Science and Engineering department, and his two friends from the same department – Amit Saha, 22, and Mehedi Hasan, 22, went to Nila Market of Rupganj on his motorcycle around 8pm on Thursday to have dinner. On their way back to Dhaka at around 3am, they were stopped by the police at the checkpost in Nila Market intersection.
The three youths were on the stationary motorcycle and talking to the police when a recklessly driven car crashed into them, killing Muhtasim on the spot and leaving Mehedi and Amit with severe injuries.
Police and locals stopped the car and detained its three passengers – Mubin, Mirajul and Asif. Mubin was driving the car.
An empty bottle of liquor and a can of beer were found in the car, which raised suspicion that Mubin could have been under the influence of alcohol when he was driving, said Senior ASP Mehedi.
The car has been seized by police.
Injured Amit has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while Hasan was to Square Hospital.
