Journalists should focus on Bangladesh Press Council. It is their responsibility. It will march ahead if the journalists remain aware of it, he says
Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed today (5 January) called upon the journalist community to strengthen the Bangladesh Press Council.
"Journalists should focus on Bangladesh Press Council. It is their responsibility. It will march ahead if the journalists remain aware of it," he said when the leaders of Law Reporters' Forum (LRF) paid a courtesy call on him at the latter's Supreme Court office.
LRF Acting President Hasan Jabed, General Secretary Moneruzzaman Mission, Joint Secretary Alamgir Mia, Treasurer Monjur Hossain, Organising Secretary SM Nur Mohammad, Training and Welfare Secretary Jabed Akhter, Publicity and Publication Secretary Habibul Islam Habib, Office Secretary Shakil Ahamed, executive members, Muhammad Yeasin, Mohammad Abu Naser and Arafat Munna, were present.
The government appointed retired judge of the High Court division Justice A K M Abdul Hakim Chairman of Bangladesh Press Council for three years on contract basis on 27 November last.
The Bangladesh Press Council is a semi-judiciary organization. One can lodge an appeal with the council if he or she is aggrieved by any news item which breaches the norm and ideology of journalism.
