Mohammedan stay perfect with seven straight wins, avenging Federation Cup loss
The victory not only solidified their position at the top of the table with 21 points but also allowed them to exact revenge for their earlier defeat to the same opponents in the Federation Cup.
Mohammedan Sporting Club continued their dominance in the Bangladesh Premier League, securing their seventh consecutive victory with a commanding 3-1 win over Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society on 10 January.
The victory not only solidified their position at the top of the table with 21 points but also allowed them to exact revenge for their earlier defeat to the same opponents in the Federation Cup.
Played at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj, the match saw Mohammedan assert themselves after a somewhat cautious start.
The opening goal came in the added time of the first half, courtesy of Raju Ahmed Jisan, who latched onto a pinpoint cross from Mehedi Hasan Mithu to chip the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net.
The goal provided relief for Mohammedan, but Rahmatganj had a golden opportunity to equalise moments later.
A foul on Samuel Boateng in the box awarded Rahmatganj a penalty, but Mohammedan goalkeeper Sujon Hossain made a crucial save, diving to his right to deny Nabib Newaj Jibon's powerful strike.
Mohammedan emerged stronger after the break and doubled their lead in the 64th minute. Returning from injury, Malian striker Souleymane Diabate converted a sharp cross from Arif Hossain with a composed finish.
Just four minutes later, Emmanuel Sunday delivered the final blow with a thunderous right-footed strike to make it 3-0.
Although Samuel Boateng pulled one back for Rahmatganj in the 86th minute with a precise left-footed shot, Mohammedan maintained control until the final whistle.
Boateng's goal, his 11th of the league campaign, showcased his quality, but it was not enough to stop Mohammedan from securing all three points.
The win was particularly satisfying for Mohammedan, who had been knocked out of the Federation Cup by Rahmatganj earlier in the season.
This time, Mohammedan not only avenged their loss but also extended their lead at the top of the table to six points over second-placed Rahmatganj, who remain on 15 points after their second defeat.
Elsewhere, Brothers Union climbed to third with a convincing 4-1 win over Dhaka Wanderers at the Shahid Barkat Stadium in Gazipur. Meanwhile, Police FC and Fortis FC played out a 1-1 draw at the Rafiquddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh.
