Students block Dhaka-Mawa expressway protesting snatching of Jubo Dal leader from police station
Students and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement have blockaded the Dhaka-Mawa expressway in protest against the snatching of Jubo Dal leader Tariqul Islam, an accused in a criminal case, from Srinagar police station in Munshiganj.
At around 12pm today (11 January), more than 50 protesters gathered near the Dhaleshwari Toll Plaza in South Keraniganj, blocking the highway and chanting slogans demanding swift trial for those involved in the incident.
The blockade disrupted traffic on the expressway, creating a one-kilometre-long gridlock. However, emergency service vehicles and ambulances were allowed to pass.
Police tried to reason with the protesters and requested them to clear the road. But the students were demonstrating until the filing of this report at 1pm.
Jubo Dal leader Tariqul, 40, an accused named in a criminal case, was forcibly taken from Srinagar police station yesterday night (10 January) by a large group of BNP activists following his arrest.
He was arrested by Srinagar police in a case filed over a previous incident of violence.
