JU releases draft voter list for student union polls, excludes students involved in July attacks
The circular instructs students to submit any concerns or discrepancies regarding the voter list in writing to the Election Commission by 14 January
The Election Commission of Jahangirnagar University Central Student Union (Jucsu) has released the draft voter list for the upcoming Jucsu election.
However, the list notably excludes students implicated in the attacks on fellow students during the quota reform movement in July last year.
Jucsu Chief Election Commissioner Prof Moniruzzaman released the draft voter list through a circular today (11 January).

The list includes regular students from the 2018-19 to 2023-24 academic years for undergraduate programmes and 2021-22 to 2023-24 for postgraduate programmes.
Notably absent are MPhil, PhD, weekend, and evening programme students, as well as irregular students from any batch.
The circular instructs students to submit any concerns or discrepancies regarding the voter list in writing to the Election Commission by 2pm on 14 January, accompanied by supporting evidence.
On 9 January, JU Vice-Chancellor (VC) and Jucsu President Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan sent a letter to Prof AKM Rashidul Alam, proctor of the university and Jucsu member secretary, urging the exclusion of students involved in the July attacks from the voter list.
These attacks included incidents on 14 July in Rabindranath Tagore Hall, 15 July in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and at the Vice-Chancellor's residence, and 17 July attacks in front of the administrative building, involving assaults on students, teachers, and even gunfire.
The VC's letter emphasised that the inclusion of students accused of these acts would be suspended based on the findings of the committee investigating these incidents.
The JU authorities established the five-member commission on 31 December to oversee the Jucsu election, outlining a roadmap for the process.
This roadmap includes the release of the draft voter list by 10 January, the final voter list by 15 January, the formulation of an electoral code of conduct by 25 January, and the announcement of the election schedule by 1 February.
