Former BB deputy governor SK Sur arrested
SK Sur Chowdhury has been under scrutiny for his alleged links to Prashanta Kumar Haldar, widely known as PK Halder
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday arrested former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Sitanshu Kumar Sur Chowdhury, known as SK Sur, from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
An ACC team arrested SK Sur with the help of the Detective Branch of police and produced him in court, ACC Deputy Director and Public Relations Officer Akhtarul Islam told The Business Standard.
The arrest follows an ACC case filed on 23 December last year against SK Sur, his wife Suparna Sur Chowdhury, and daughter Nandita Sur Chowdhury for failing to submit their wealth statements within the stipulated time.
SK Sur has been under scrutiny for his alleged links to Prashanta Kumar Haldar, widely known as PK Halder.
In June 2022, the ACC interrogated SK Sur and former Bangladesh Bank executive director Shah Alam over the embezzlement of Tk2,500 crore by PK Halder through shell companies associated with International Leasing.
Subsequent actions followed this investigation.
In July 2022, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) directed banks to freeze the accounts of SK Sur and his wife, Suparna Sur Chowdhury.
In August 2023, the ACC sought information on bank transactions involving SK Sur, his wife, and his daughter.
Later, on 28 August 2024, a Dhaka court ordered the seizure of income tax documents belonging to the family based on an ACC application.
In October 2024, the court imposed a travel ban on SK Sur, his wife, and his daughter, restricting them from leaving the country.
