Police seized 600 sacks of government rice allocated for the Open Market Sale (OMS) programme from a private warehouse in Bagerhat's Fakirhat Keramat Ali Market last night (22 January).
Two individuals were arrested during the raid.
The detainees were identified as Ashatit Majumder, 21, son of Profulla Majumder and owner of the warehouse named Majumder Bhandar, and Abdur Rasul, 45, an employee of the warehouse.
According to Fakirhat Model Police Station, the sacks, labelled with the Food Directorate's logo, were being repackaged into popular Nurjahan brand bags for illegal sale.
"Acting on a tip-off, we raided the site around 8:30pm and seized the rice, along with detaining two individuals," said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Kabir.
Ashatit Majumder said they purchased 667 sacks of OMS rice from Bogura's Karatoa Rice Mill under the firm Messrs Asif Enterprise for Tk9.34 lakh. The rice arrived at their warehouse yesterday morning, where repackaging began before the police raid.
"The seized sacks are being brought under police custody for further investigation, and the detainees are being interrogated," said OC Alamgir Kabir.
