Fernandes insists Manchester United must never settle for mediocrity
His comments came after he delivered a stoppage-time winner to secure a 2-1 victory against an under-strength Rangers side on 23 January in the Europa League.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has urged fans not to lower their expectations despite the team's ongoing struggles, particularly at Old Trafford this season.
His comments came after he delivered a stoppage-time winner to secure a 2-1 victory against an under-strength Rangers side on 23 January in the Europa League.
United had entered the match under significant pressure, having lost four of their previous five home games. Manager Ruben Amorim had described his side as "the worst" in the club's storied history.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Fernandes emphasised that Manchester United must always aspire to win.
"At this club, you need to win every game," he said. "If you don't, it's going to be tough, and there will be difficult moments. This is a massive club that is used to winning games. I hope our fans never get used to losing games, even in tough situations. They should feel that this team must win every match."
Fernandes' late goal brought United closer to securing direct passage to the Europa League last 16.
A point against FCSB in Romania next week would guarantee a top-eight finish in the group stage, allowing them to bypass the playoff round.
Manager Ruben Amorim has been vocal about his desire to avoid the additional matches, aiming instead to use the time for refining tactics.
Fernandes, however, has set his sights even higher, expressing his determination to go all the way in the tournament.
"Today's win was crucial because we want to advance in the Europa League," he said. "Our goal is to reach the final in Bilbao and lift the trophy. Avoiding the extra two games is important, but our ultimate aim is to win the competition."
Manchester United also secured a dramatic comeback last week, overturning a 1-0 deficit to beat bottom-of-the-table Southampton 3-1, with Amad Diallo netting a hat-trick.
However, Fernandes stressed the importance of delivering consistent performances rather than relying on late-game heroics.
"It's not just about showing character; we need to demonstrate that throughout the entire 90 minutes," Fernandes explained. "We can't wait for setbacks like conceding a goal to bring out our fighting spirit. Consistency is key—regardless of the situation, we must always strive to win the game."
